Have you ever walked into a room and felt lethargic the moment you stepped in? Have you ever found it difficult to fall asleep because you feel like the air in your bedroom is heavy and stale? Although we might think these are due to the weather conditions outside, it is more likely to be solved through the way we design our homes. It is the design of our home that will determine how the air circulates within our homes. Stale air is one of the major contributors to how you feel in your home.

It is worth pointing out that although the solution to these problems might be to simply air condition your home, this is not only costly but also wasteful. However, it is the more astute homeowner who is looking to home design to revolutionize the way you live in your home. In this article, we will explore how this might be achieved.

    The Power of Natural Ventilation

Natural ventilation is the supply of air to an indoor space and the removal of air from an indoor space without the use of mechanical means. It is the flow of external air to an indoor space due to differences in pressure and temperature. It is essential to tap into this power to have the highest quality of air inside your home.

A home without proper ventilation means the home is filled with pollutants and allergens. This leads to the formation of mold in the home. However, when you design a home to ensure proper ventilation, you allow the pollutants to exit the home as you allow the fresh oxygen to get in. This ensures the home stays at a comfortable temperature. This leads to a home that feels inherently fresh and invigorating.

    Strategic Layouts for Optimal Airflow

However, to achieve such a breezy home, you cannot simply open the windows. It is essential to adopt a strategic approach in the overall layout of the home. This strategic approach includes the concept of cross-ventilation. This concept requires the layout to ensure an opening exists at both sides of the room; this opening will serve as the passage for the wind. The wind will then serve to push the hot air out of the home through the other opening. Ultimately, the home remains well ventilated at all times.

The interior layout of the home is an essential aspect in ensuring proper ventilation within the home. An open layout ensures proper ventilation. The incorporation of walls and corridors ensures the formation of hot spots in the home. This means the home will be warmer in some areas than in other areas. Yet, by removing the walls and corridors from the home, you ensure an open layout. This layout ensures the home remains breezy since the air can move freely from one end of the home to the other. High ceilings ensure the home stays cool since the hot air can go somewhere.

    Material Selection and Smart Technology

The materials used in the construction of the home will also help in ensuring that the home remains cool. Natural materials will be the best choice for ensuring that the humidity levels remain low. On the other hand, the use of synthetic materials will ensure that the home is sealed off, and this will result in the formation of condensation and damp spots.

There are other technologies that can be employed to improve the above-discussed traditional design elements. With the advent of smart home technologies, it has become possible to monitor the indoor air quality and temperature and open the windows or skylights to ensure maximum ventilation of the indoor environment under the right conditions.

In addition, ceiling fans can also be operated at the right time to ensure that the indoor environment is circulated, and the home remains at the optimal temperature without interfering with the natural flow of the above-discussed traditional design elements.

    Designing a Fresher Future

While many people view the perfect home as the perfect place to relax and show off their furniture and paint colors, the truth of the matter is that the perfect home really has to do with the basic elements of design that control the interaction of your property with the environment. By employing an open design, natural ventilation, and appropriate materials such as metal vents for the floors, your stuffy property will surely become the perfect place to relax.

If you are looking to improve your property this year, you should consider starting with your current ventilation sources. By changing the doorway or adding a skylight, you will surely improve the environment of your property. Ventilation is an investment in your comfort, your health, and your property!
